Minutes of the 55th Meeting of the Board of Directors*
The ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition
was held at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel, in Dallas, Texas.
In conjunction with the Congress and Exposition, the 55th Meeting of the
Board of Directors was held on November 18, 1997.
A majority quorum being present, President Crandall called the meeting
to order at 13:10 CST. The following were in attendance: Jan Achenbach,
Dave Bogy, Mike Carroll, Steve Crandall, Earl Dowell, Horacio Espinosa,
Bob Haythornthwaite, Dean Mook, Frank Moon, Sia Nemat-Nasser, Tinsley Oden,
J. N. Reddy, Dennis Siginer, and Chuck Steele.
1. J. N. Reddy moved that the Minutes be accepted, D. Bogy seconded,
and the motion passed by voice vote.
2. D. Mook, AAM Secretary, reported that there are 806 paid members.
3. D. Mook, acting for R. Heller, AAM Treasurer, presented
the Treasurer's report. M. Carroll moved that the report be accepted,
J. N. Reddy seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote.
4. President Crandall announced that Professor Jan Achenbach
of Northwestern University has won the 1997 Distinguished Service Award**.
Professor Achenbach will receive the award at the next Meeting.
5. President Crandall informed the Board of Directors of some changes
in the way the Academy's publications would be handled in the future.
An Editorial Board*** was formed to oversee all of the publishing operations of the Academy.
President Crandall appointed R. Haythornthwaite to the newly created post of Publisher
for the Academy and praised his outstanding lengthy service as Editor of Mechanics.
President Crandall introduced Professor Horacio D. Espinosa of Purdue University
to the Board as the new Editor of Mechanics and asked him to begin immediately.
H. Espinosa addressed the Board, stating that he will soon have a new group
of Associate Editors+ and asking for everyone's cooperation in providing
news of interest to the Members. (Secretary's comment: since the Meeting,
the entire operation has been shifted from Virginia Tech to Purdue. The first
edition of Mechanics to be published at Purdue has appeared and met
with nearly universal approval.)
Again, there was some discussion of establishing a website for the Academy.
(Secretary's comment: since the meeting an outstanding website has been
established at Purdue; the address is given in Mechanics.)
6. In his preamble to the introduction of Chuck Steele as
the new Chairman of the PACAM Committee, President Crandall
praised Art Leissa's initiative in organizing PACAM I and
his leadership in acting as the Chair of the PACAM Committee ever since.
Crandall stated that he was sorry that Leissa was not present
to receive a well-deserved round of applause for his efforts,
and Crandall noted that Leissa had recommended C. Steele for his
replacement. President Crandall then introduced C. Steele as the new Chair
of the PACAM Committee++. Steele then reported on the progress of the PACAM VI.
There is a website to advertise it and some travel money has been obtained
from NSF. The response has been good.
7. The Nominating Committee+++ nominated Professor Dusan Krajcinovic
of Arizona State University for President-Elect. There was no candidate for
Director's position vacated by the election of D. Bogy to President-Elect.
8. D. Bogy suggested that the Meetings of the Fellows,
the Board, and the general Membership be combined.
This will be tried at the next meeting.
S. Nemat-Nasser proposed that all nominees for the Junior Award
be given a year's membership free of charge. No action was taken.
The next Meeting of the Board, the Fellows, and the Membership will
be held on June 23, 1998 in Gainesville, Florida in conjunction
with the U. S. National Congress.
The Meeting was adjourned at 16:00 CST.
